A moodboard is tantamount to visual brainstorming. It’s scrapbooking: a collage of images, snippets, notes and ideas used in video and animation production, as in photography and graphic design. The main goal is to help all concerned get inspired, and to facilitate the discussion toward a firm look and feel that will subsequently apply to all visual elements created for the project. But a good moodboard should also contain key references, or must- haves, such as what font to use, color codes and other branding elements provided by a client.
The moodboard is ideally established between the creative brief and the storyboard, certainly before a shoot or before any graphics are created in earnest. A moodboard can also be a powerful tool as part of a pitch for a video or animation project. It is faster than reading over a script, treatment, or creative brief. It packs visual punch that delivers clear, efficient, and ultimately inspiring food for thought to help kickstart a project.
